Launching Smart View from an Interactive Reporting Document


Purpose


This tutorial covers how to launch Smart View from an Interactive Reporting document within Workspace.


Overview


Interactive Reporting documents contain queries to relational data sources, such as Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases, or to multidimensional databases (MDDs), such as Essbase. The section created in the Interactive Reporting document to access and query the Essbase cube data is called a CubeQuery.
Oracle Hyperion Smart View for Office (Smart View) is a component of Hyperion Foundation Services. Smart View is the interface between Microsoft Office applications and Oracle's Enterprise Performance Management system. You can import, export, refresh and analyze CubeQueries by using Smart View.
When an Interactive Reporting document containing a CubeQuery is published to Workspace, you can launch Smart View and export your data to Microsoft Excel, without first downloading a local copy of the Interactive Reporting document.

Scenario


As an analyst , you are asked to analyze profit information for the Eastern market and California from a CubeQuery section in an Interactive Reporting document. The Interactive Reporting document is available in Workspace. You will open the document in the HTML client and in the Interactive Reporting Web Client. You will connect directly to the Essbase data source from Smart View and modify the members.

Prerequisites


Before starting this tutorial, you should:
1.Have access to explore and view Workspace content.
2.Have a user account in your authentication directory.
3.Have some experience in creating reports with Reporting and Analysis tools.
4.Have access to an Essbase sample application.

Launching Smart View from an Interactive Reporting Document in the HTML Client


In this topic, you open an Interactive Reporting document in the HTML client. You then launch Smart View and connect to the data source.
To launch Smart View and connect to a data source from Workspace, perform these steps:
1.
In Workspace, select Explore.
The folder hierarchy in the Workspace repository is displayed.

Right-click an Interactive Reporting document containing a CubeQuery section.
A shortcut menu is displayed.

Select Open As > HTML.
The Interactive Reporting document opens in dynamic HTML as a new tabbed window in Workspace. The document sections are displayed.

In this example, the Profit Margin.bqy document was selected in step 2. The Profit Margin.bqy contains two CubeQuery sections, Profit Margin by Market and Profit Margin by Product.

Select a CubeQuery section, and select Actions > Launch Smart View.
The Smart View client begins the process of exporting the contents of the CubeQuery section into Microsoft Excel.

A blank Microsoft Excel worksheet is opened. The Smart View Data Source Manager dialog box, and Connect to Data Source Manager dialog box are displayed.

In the Connect to Data Source dialog box, enter your Essbase login credentials.

Click Connect.
The CubeQuery data is exported into Microsoft Excel, and is ready to be refreshed or analyzed. The Smart View Data Source Manager displays the current connection to the source data.

In this example, the CubeQuery data is connected to an Essbase application called Sample Basic. You can perform ad hoc analysis and apply formatting to the data in the Excel spreadsheet.


Launching Smart View from an Interactive Reporting Document in Interactive Reporting Web Client


In this topic, you open an Interactive Reporting document in Interactive Reporting Web Client. You then launch Smart View and connect to the data source.
To launch Smart View and connect to a data source from Workspace, perform these steps:
1.
In Workspace, select Explore.

Notice that in Interactive Reporting Web Client, you are able to manipulate the CubeQeuery data prior to exporting it to Microsoft Excel through Smart View.

Select a CubeQuery section, and select Query > Launch Smart View.

In the Connect to Data Source dialog box, enter your Essbase login credentials.

Click Connect.
The Smart View Data Source Manager displays the current CubeQuery connection to the source data in Essbase.

In this example the CubeQuery is connected to the Essbase application, Sample Basic.
The CubeQuery data is exported into a new Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

You can refresh the data at any time. To do so, in the POV window, click the refresh icon ( ).


Analyzing CubeQuery Data in Smart View


In this topic, you analyze CubeQuery data that you exported in the previous topics. You first change the member selection. You then perform ad hoc analysis of the data.
To analyze CubeQuery data, perform these steps:
1.
In the POV window, click the down arrow next to a member.
The drop-down list displays the current member selection and ellipses. The ellipses indicate that a member hierarchy is available for the selected dimension.

In this example, Market is the current member selection.

2.
Select the ellipses.
The Member Selection dialog box is displayed. You can change the dimension, apply a filter or specify children or descendants of a member as the dimension.

Select the member, children, or descendants of the member, and then click the right arrow.
The member items are added to the Selection pane.

In this example, specific markets in the East and California are selected and added to the Selection pane.
You can easily remove member items. To do so, select a single member, and click the left arrow. Alternatively, to remove all member selections, click the double right arrows.

Click OK.
The Member Selection dialog box closes, and the members list is updated.

Select a member from the members list, and click the Refresh button ( ).
The data in the spreadsheet is updated.

In this example, the margin and profit data for New York is displayed. You can return to the Member Selection list at any time.

6.
In the spreadsheet, select a member, and select Hyperion > Ad Hoc Analysis.
You can perform ad hoc analysis directly in the spreadsheet.

Select File > Save.
The Save As dialog box is displayed.

7.In the File name text box, enter a name for your file, and click Save.
